Here at YOUniquely Done, we believe that weddings should truly reflect the couple. Their amazing personalities and unique style should be captured on their special day and not lost in the mix. Although a traditional wedding, like those featured on bridal magazines, would be perfect for some couples, others would embrace the opportunity to make their day personal and just the way they want it... after all, it's their day!

I stumbled upon an article and thought I'd share it with you. Here are some recent examples of utterly wacky — and utterly memorable — weddings.

Holy matrimony, Batman!

For those of you out there who always sensed that Batman and Wonder Woman would make a great couple: It’s happened!
On July 31, Sharon Wetherell and Neil Vaughan of Devon, England, tied the knot while all dressed up as their favorite superheroes. As “Wonder Woman” theme music blared, Wetherell, 40, made a grand entrance at the ceremony wearing blue hot pants, a red corset, flashy boots and a tiara and veil that cost her about $160. The groom’s face-obscuring Batman costume set him back about $290.  The couple’s friends and family also got gussied up as superheroes. Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Robin, Poison Ivy, Lara Croft, the Joker, Bananaman and the Incredibles were all in attendance.

No cold feet at T.J. Maxx wedding

Who doesn’t get excited about the prospect of bagging a bargain? Bride Lisa Satayut decided to combine that feeling with her excitement over bagging her beau.

Explaining that T.J. Maxx is her “happy place,” Satayut married Drew Ellis in July in the size 8 shoe aisle of a T.J. Maxx store in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

The bride — a self-proclaimed “'Maxxinista” — wore a strapless white chiffon gown, with long black gloves and bright green gladiator-style sandals. A widened aisle, vine-covered arch and white chairs with red bows highlighted the traditional ceremony that included string music, display-dodging cameramen — and curious shoppers who stopped bargain hunting long enough to watch.

Tracey and Vivian Williams, a happy couple from Wales, tied the knot in May by dressing up as two of their favorite movie characters: the green ogres Shrek and Princess Fiona. Tracey Williams, 33, told the British newspaper The Daily Mail that the themed wedding idea suited her and her new husband perfectly.

“Our friends always used to say we looked like the characters when we went on nights out,” she said. “Even though Shrek and Fiona are both green ogres, we didn’t take it offensively because we like them so much.”
The couple actually saw a “Shrek” movie on their first date and have been loyal fans ever since. To get ready for the big day, the pair covered themselves in green body paint and affixed fake green ears to the tops of their heads. Tracey donned a bright red wig to complete the Princess Fiona look, and Vivian sported checked trousers.

The Williams’ wedding guests got in on the fun, with the best man dressing up as Monsieur Hood, the bride’s father going as Lord Farquaad, the bride’s mother playing the Fairy Godmother and the maid of honor playing Snow White.

Your Wedding Day Vision

For some brides, they have had a perfect vision of their wedding day ever since they were a little girl. If you’re like me, you never even imagined yourself getting married. Nonetheless, a vision of your wedding helps to not only make your dream come true, but also focus your efforts throughout the planning process.

So, where does this vision come from? From music to painting, picture to place, your wedding day vision can come from the most random things.

Music. Listening to the radio and hearing a familiar song might evoke certain emotion, a mood that can capture what you want for your wedding day. Don’t shy away from it. Although it may seem unconventional, your wedding day is a celebration of your love and life together. If Regina Spektor’s Folding Chair catches your attention for your wedding day, then have a beach wedding with assorted folding chairs. Put a sign up that instructs your guests to “grab a folding chair and sit next to me” or “bury your feet in the sand and feel the breeze.” The possibilities are limitless. Whether you are inspired by a jazz melody or a punk-rock tune, follow your heart and trust your instincts. At the end of the day, it is your wedding day and guests would be thrilled that it is not your generic out-of-the-magazine wedding.

Painting or Work of Art. From French impressionists to abstract, a picture is truly worth a thousand words. Can’t decide on how you want your wedding to be remembered as? Well, then perhaps a painting or work of art can do it for you! Consider Van Gogh’s Starry Starry Night… or Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande. Your vision could be as elegant as a dreamy and starry candle-lit ceremony on a bridge, followed by a sophisticated dinner at a café, or as casual as a lakeside ceremony followed by fishing and lounging-filled reception.

Location. When my husband and I first started planning our wedding, we had completely opposing visions. He wanted a grandiose wedding at a castle, complete with stone walls and towers. I, on the other hand, wanted a peaceful meadow with views of the mountains. With these two images in mind, we searched the internet for something that would come close. Thanks to technology, we didn’t have to travel everywhere in search for the perfect wedding venue. We found it – a stone chapel situated on a cliff, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was heavenly. We had our ceremony there, followed by the reception in the valley. Held at a backyard of a Southern manor with a river running across it, our reception had a casual feel that made all our guests feel at home.

Story. A true fan of Pride and Prejudice, who has found her own Mr. Darcy, your vision can be spurred by pure emotions and settings from your most loved novel. A vintage, Elizabethan wedding full of poetry and class may be your vision for your wedding day. A tea-time, afternoon reception, complete with vintage tea cups and fresh cut flowers can be driving force behind your wedding day vision. What about a suspense thriller that is truly heart-stopping. Then, consider an invitation that comes either as a newspaper clipping or a clue. A mystery-themed reception or a heavy veil to cover the bride’s face may do the trick!

No matter where your vision comes from, remember that your wedding day is only one day in your married life. It sure is important, but your marriage is not just an event. Marriage is a lifelong commitment to love, cherish and respect your partner. Work on your vision together. Even before your wedding, practice communicating to each other and engaging in the careful dance of compromise. You never know where it will take you, but I guarantee that it will lead to a better beginning of your married life.

Let your vision not be just your own, but yours as a couple.
